Sripad Bhakti Prodip Tirtha Maharaj, Sripad Bhakti Hridaya Bon Maharaj, Sri Sambidananda Das were the three who were nominated by Srila Prabhupada to cross the ocean to reach the country of Europe to preach and propagate the teachings of Sriman Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. They left India from Bombay Port on 18th March, 1933 to represent Srila Prabhupada or the Gaudiya Mission. The Gaudiya Mission Society, UK was founded on 14th April, 1933 at West Minister Custom Hall.
Miss Daisy Cocilia Bowtwel, a young lady of a rich honourable family, was attracted among many others to the philosophy of Gaudiyas and surrendered from heart and soul to the Lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada. She was initiated through Sripad Tirtha Maharaj in the Month of February, 1937. She was graced by the name Vinod Vani Dasi.
Vinod Vani Dasi donated her residential house for the worship of Sri Gaur Radha Govinda Jiu and Sri Basudev Vigraha and simultaneously to Gaudiya Mission Society, U.K. She breathed her last in the year 1981, keeping back all her money and properties in the name of Gaudiya Mission. Her heart’s wishes were fulfilled, Sri Vasudev Gaudiya Math was established at her house at 27- Crunhurst Road, London N.W.2. Sri Kamalaksha Das Bramhachari was the Saint who, by the order of the authority of the mission, reached London in the year 1982 and took the charge of the math.
In the year 1987 the fate of the citizens of Europe raised high; when Srila Acharyapad(Srimad Bhakti Srirup Bhagbat Maharaj )made it auspicious by keeping his lotus feet on the land of Europe as the 1st Acharya of the Mission. His presence brought the flood of Harinam Samkirtam among the residents there. Seminars were held at different parts of London. Thousands of spiritual-minded citizens attended the seminars and were influenced to follow the preaching. Many Europeans and others surrendered themselves to the feet of Srila Acharyapada, even some of them were converted to vaishnava saints.
At present the prosperity of the math has increased. Every year the disciples of London comes to India. The secretary of the Mission visits the branch Math regularly; the president of the Mission also visits the branch occasionally.
Sripad Bhakti Nivas Narayan Maharaj, Sripad Bhakti Promod Puri Maharaj and others joint accompanied by the present Acharya of the mission in the year 2007, to celebrate the 25th anniversary. Numerous seminars were held at different parts of London. People of a high profile joined the seminars and were influenced by the philosophy of Gaudiyas. The High Commissioner of India at London was present in the seminar.
In the year 2006 the deities were brought from India. Sri Guru, Gauranga, Radha- Gopinath Jiu were endowed with life by Srila Acharyapada at Karimgunj Math. Later they made their auspicious appearance at London. While huge gathering of devotees and fortunate souls, performing Harinam Samkirtan, the Deities entered the temple at Vasudev Gaudiya Math. In this program Sripad Parvat Maharaj was present.
The founder of Gaudiya Maths and Mission, Nityalila Prabista Om Vishnupada Paramhansa Sri Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupada, after establishing the Chaitanya Math at Mayapur, wanted to open a main centre or the head office at this capital city. He established a Gaudiya Math at 1, Ultadingi Junction Road , and named it- “Sri Bhaktivinod Asan.” There he started the worship of Sri Gaur Radha Govinda jiu from 6th September, 1920. Some time later, a rich business man being deeply impressed by the spiritual personality of Prabhupada wanted to donate some land. The said fortunate soul namely Sri Jagabandhu Dutta belonging to Banaripara of Dist. Barisal, Bangladesh, procured some land at the bank of the Ganges at Bagbazar. He constructed a mighty fully ornamented temple of marble, attached to Natyamandir (Kirtan hall), and sevak khandas( dwelling places for the devotees) bearing all its expenses. On 5th October in the year 1930, Srila Prabhupada with all the devotees inaugurated the new temple installing the deities there. He celebrated festivals of Sri Radha-Madanmohan , Radha- Govinda and Radha-Gopinath and also inaugurated the Paramarthik(regarding soul) Exhibition. Being much satisfied with the glorifying service of Sri Jagabandhu Dutta (Bhaktiranjan), he, with an engrossed mood, uttered many-a-time, while on the way to Nilachal from Barhanagar, “Sriman Chaitanya Mahaprabhu”, came to this place along the bank of the Ganges associated with His associates. Here, where our Math has been established, He took rest for some time. Srila Prabhupada started celebrating the annual festival for a month long time; every Sunday ‘Nagar Sankirtan Sovayatra’ would come out circumambulating the city, Calcutta; live lectures would be listen to the radio on the occasion of Baladev purnima, Krishna janmastami, Radhastami, Bhoktivinod jayanti etc. He would deliver discourses on Srimad Bhagbat for 6 days long from Baladev purnima onwards.
Till these days these functions are celebrated with much zeal and lustre. The celebration of Chandan Yatra(smearing Radha-Krisna withsandle pest) of Sri Krishna during the hot days of summer, starting from Akshaytritiya for a period of 21 days, is still a matter of conspicuous. Thousands of people gather each day to get a glimpse of the beautifully decorated Lord Krishna with Sandal pest and flowers.
The gorgeously ornamented old structure attracted eyes of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. It felt honoured to declare the building as Heritage Building of Kolkata in the year 2006.
Srila Prabhupada spent his last days, 6 years at this Math. He breathed his last here at his ‘Bhajan kuthir’. This Math is also significant till today among the Gaudiya devotees, world-wide, as the place of Srila Prabhupada ‘s demise ‘.
When Om Vishnu Pada Paramhansa 108 Sri Srimad Bhakti Keval Audulomi Maharaj was ornamented with the chair of Acharya of Gaudiya Mission, he felt disheartened that the Mission has no place for Bhajan(Devotion) at Sri Dham Nabadwip, the most sacred place for the Gaudiyas. Being inspired by his Guru Srila Prabhupada , he immediately collected a huge piece of land at Godrum Dham – the place significant among Nabadwips as Kirthanakshya Dwip or the place of chanting Harikirtan.
On 6th September, 1957 the foundation Stone was laid on the day of Birth Anniversary of Thakur Bhakti Vinod. On 5th March, 1958, the newly built temple was inaugurated amidst huge gathering of devotees and spiritual- minded peoples, chanting the name of Lord Mahaprabhu. The deities of Sri Gour Radha Godrumbihari jiu took pleasure to come from Derjiling Math to be sited there and to be worshipped and to glorify the temple. Srila Gurumaharaj named the temple by the name of his Guru ‘Sri Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Gaudiya Math’.
It was on 21st March of the same year for the first time Srila Gurumaharaj started the Nabadwip Dham Parikrama (circumambulation of Nabadip Dham) on behalf of the Mission after a long intervention.
He inaugurated the Bhaktivinod natyamandir and monument (Puspa Samadhi Mandir) of Srila Prabhupada in the year 1960 and the deity of Srila Prabhupada was endowed with life on 10th December, 1976.
The location of this math is very close to ‘ Swananda Sukhada Kunja (or the bhajan Kuthir of Srila Bhaktivinod).
Every year the devotees assemble here on the occasion of Gaurajayanti or Holy. They listen to Gaurkatha(discourses on Chaitanya Mahaprahu) for seven days and for 5 days they perform circumambulation of nabadwips (nine islands) with the saints of the mission and at last are engrossed in nectarine Gaursundar at the auspicious Birth anniversary of Lord Sri Gauranga Sundar surrendering their sole at the feet of Guru and Gauranga forgetting all the calls of the material world. When the devotees chant aloud-
‘Nitai ki nam aneche re namer hate
…..shradhya mullye nam diteche re’
the wind around reminds echoing of some events 500 years ago that took place when Lord Himself as Gauranga Mahaprabhu with His associates- Nitaynanda and others came to this material plane to cure the sufferings of the souls.
The beauty of the math premises surrounded by gardens reminds the Divine abode of Lord Sri Krishna (Golak Vindavan Dham). The winds here glorifies Sriman Mahaprabhu. And the river Ganges flows down carrying the divine water of Mercy to rescue us the fallen soul from the mundane plane to a spiritual Platform of ever-lasting Happiness.
On sunday 31st March 1929, Srila Prabhupada taking all his associates from Mayapur made his divine presence at the Site of the Math and inaugurated the newly built beautiful math naming it Sri Kunja Kutir Math. He arranged a seminar in the town hall of Krishnagar (the head quarter of Nadia district) and gave a spiritual speech which won the heart of the residents there and influenced them to be inclined to devotional practice under the guidance of Srila Prabhupada.
Later on 21st August 1975 Srila Gurumaharaj (Srimad Bhakti Keval Audulomi Maharaj) inaugurated the kitchen attached to the Math premises. In the same year seeing the condition of the temple being wretched on the passage of time, he laid the foundation stone to build a new temple.
The temple was inaugurated in the year 1982 on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritia by the Lotus Hands of Srimad Bhakti SrirupBhagabat Maharaj alias Srila Acharyapada.
Sri Purusottam Math was first inaugurated at ‘Bhakti Kuthir’. Deity of Sri Guranga was endowed with life by Srila Prabhupada for worshipping and the demise day of Srila Gadadhar Pandit and Thakur Bhakti Vinod was celebrated.
On 11th May, 1929 Srila Prabhupada brought from Mayapur the deity of Mayapur Chandra. The devotees from Bengal brought different gifts and offerings for the Mayapur Chandra . A cab was hired from Calcutta and the deity was taken to Narendra sarabor for ‘Jalbihar’; boating amidst the Narendra Tank was taken with a
huge procession. He delivered a lecture on ‘Sri Krishna Anusandhan’ in a seminar on the day of Rukmini Dyadashi and also discussed the 13 questions of Mahaprabhu to Sri Ray Ramananda . Ray Bahadur Mr. Janaki Bose (father of Netaji Subhas Bose) was present in the seminar.
On 29th July, 1936 the math was shifted to Chatak Parbat and temples with dwelling places of the saints were built. Here Sri Radha Vinod Madhav Jiu were endowed with life and daily worship was started with much lustre. He delivered discourses before numerous highly educated citizens there and ‘Annakut Mahotsab ‘ which made a history in the mission and the locality was celebrated.
In the year 2002 the Puspa Samadhi Mandir(monument)of Srila Puri Goswami Thakur (Acharyadev) was built and inaugurated by the hands of the present Acharya, Om Vishnupada Paramhansa 108 Srimad Bhakti Suhrid Paribrajak Maharaj, and the deity of Srila Puri Goswami Thakur was endowed with life.
At present the temple situated near the Tota Gopinath jiu temple, is surrounded by creepers, blossomed trees and plants all around with a bonus of existing calmness, and is the best place for the sincere devotees or religious minded souls to perform devotion and meditation.
Srijukta Umakanta Choudhury and Srijukta Rasananda Choudhury donated their own temple to the Mission in the year 1942 hearing the Harikatha from the lips of Srila Puri Goswami Thakur. Sri Goura, Radha-Govinda Jiu were transferred from Dhaka to Remuna and till now those deities have being worshipped. Besides these, Sri Jagannath, Sri Baladev and Sri Subhadra Jiu are also present there. The Khir Chora Gopinath temple is just a mile away from this location where Gopinath stole the Khir Prasad (milk product) for Srila Madhabendra Puripada. Apart from these Saptasara Lake is located near by, which is created by Lord Sri Ramchandra.
It was on 17th May ,1929 Srila Prabhupada for the first time came to Alalnath. He visited the historical temple of Alwarnath, which was in a wretched condition, and started renovation in the same year. After two years i.e. on 12th July, 1931 His divine Grace Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupada inaugurated a math beside the temple and named it Sri Bramha Gaudiya Math and started worshipping the deity of Sri Gaudiyanath ,Sriman Mahaprabhu .
On 27th June, 1934 Srila Radha Gopinath jiu was endowed with life
by the lotus hand of Srila Prabhupada on the occasion of Snanyatra (of Srila Jaganath Dev).
The large compound with garden all around with existing calmness claims the feeling of bipralambha (pangs of love in separation from Lord), as expressed by Srila Chaitanya Dev, who cried here for those fortnights during the ‘Anabasarkal’ of Jagannath Dev.
The renovation of the math into a complete new form is made by the lotus hands of His Divine grace Om Vishnupada Paramhansa 108 Sri Srila Bhakti Suhrid Paribrajak Maharaj, the present Acharya Of the Mission on 4th July 2005.
This math is situated at a distance of 14 km. from Puri. The place is called Bramha Giri . Sri Alwarnath Jiu- deity of Narayan is being worshipped from a historical period.
Srila Chaitanya Dev being upset for being unable to see Jagannath Dev came to Alalnath Temple. He cried continuously for a fortnight in pangs of love in separation of the beloved Lord. Still now the melted stone stands in the memory of the event.
Srila Prabhupada laid the foundation stone on 30th Oct., 1929 of Gaudiya Math on a vast land situated at the junction point of G.T. Road and Cunning Road near the Tribeni Sangam. The Great devotee from Baikabag, Sri Ganesh Chandra Dev met the expenses to collect the land.
The very next year, i.e. in the mid of the year of 1930 by Srila Prabhupada, the deities of Sri Gaur Radha Govinda Jiu were endowed (the heart’s beloved deities of Srila Rupa Goswami) with life at the newly built temple, on the occasion of Kumbha Mela . The
only motivation was to promulgate the teachings of Sri Krishna Chaitanya at this holy place where Sriman Chaitanya Dev taught Srila Rupa Goswamipada .
It was in the year 1936 on 7th January he unvailed a Paramarthik Exhibition and being the chairman of the seminar there, delivered a lecture in English to stimulate spiritual consciousness.

Sri Rup Gaudiya Math is situated at a distance of 1½ Km from Sangam i.e. the junction place of the Ganga, the Jamuna and the Saraswati. This huge mighty garden-oriented temple brings the sense of Vrindavan. It is also being renovated in the year 2000 by the lotus hands of His Divine Grace Om Vishnupada Paramhansa108 Srila Bhakti Suhrid Paribrajak Maharaj.
