Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur

Posted on: April 11, 2018 Posted By: Gaudiya Mission

Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur was born in Mamgachi in the Nabadwip of West Bengal. His mother was Sri Narayani Devi, the niece of SrivasaPandita, an ardent follower of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Srila Vrindavana Das Thakur’s father, Vaikunthanatha Vipra, was from Sylhet in East Bengal. However, it is said that his father died before he was born and so his mother moved to the house of Srivasa in Mayapur. In his youth Vrindavan Das Thakur took initiation from Nityananda, one of the main associates of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and he was apparently the last disciple of Nityananda.

In 1535, Srila Vrindvan Das Thakur wrote the Chaitanya Bhagavata, a biography of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Initially, the Chaitanya Bhagavata was named Chaitanya Mangala. However the poet Lochana Dasalso wrote a work with this title. Therefore, the leading Vaishnavas in Vrindavan met and decided that henceforth Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur's book would be known as the Chaitanya Bhagavata, and Lochana Das’s book would remain as the Chaitanya Mangala.

Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur is considered by Gaudiya Vaishnavas as the Vyasa of Chaitanya’s pastimes, since he was the first to reveal that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was God himself and not just an incarnation of Godhead.

It would seem that the Chaitanya Bhagavata was the only major work written by Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur. There are a number of other works attributed to him but their authorship has not been validated.

Sri Vrindavan Das Thakur is an incarnation of Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa. Vedavyasa wrote the Vedas. He then wrote Srimad Bhagavatam the mature fruit of the Vedas that describes Lord Krishna’s pastimes. Then, as Vrindavan Das Thakura, Vyasdeva wrote Sri Chaitanya Bhagavata (previously known as Chaitanya Mangala); it describes Krishna’s pastimes as Gaurhari in Navadwip-Mayapur. This most enchanting rendition of Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s pastimes gives the conclusion of Srimad Bhagavatam – Bhakti, the devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna.

Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur is Lord Nityananda’s favourite devotee and therefore he is the original Vyasadeva in describing the pastimes of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.” As SrilaVyasadeva told Sri Krishna’s pastimes in Bhagavatam and other Puranas, Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur described Chaitanya lila in Chaitanya Bhagavata.
