Unknown Information about Chandan Yatra of Sri Krishna

Posted on: April 27, 2017 Posted By: Gaudiya Mission

Shri Purushottamdev (Shri Jagannath) asked his votary Vaishnavaraj Shri Indradyumnadev, a very truthful, scholarly and virtuous king of the Golden Age to anoint His body with fragrant sandal paste on the day of Akshay Tritiya. With this begins the Chandan Yatra festival which continues till the next Shukla Ashtami day. In pursuance of His command to King Indradyumnadev, the festival is being observed even today.

The devotees of Shri Hari take, with a genuine sense of sincerity, the garland, sandal paste etc left over by him as his grace or favour. The devotees eager to serve the God are to smear the body of Shri Hari with a sense of selfless service. The smearing of the idol of eternal, omniscient and ever blissful Shri Purushottam with sandal paste easily removes the three kinds of affliction, spiritual, material and supernatural, the vilest of men suffer from. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupad says that the people who have the resolve to worship the God do not indulge in materialistic enjoyment nor in excessive eagerness to shun garlands and sandal paste become opposed to enjoyment. Their enjoyment and sacrifice are very natural and beneficial.
