The five day Sri Chaitanya Mela on the occasion of Sri Chaitanya Janmotsava (530th Birth Anniversary Celebration of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu) in Kolkata came to an end last evening. One minute’s silence was observed and a resolution was adopted expressing grief over the death of those who lost their lives in yesterday’s tragic accident due to collapse of a portion of Vivekananda Flyover under construction. Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal, who was the Chief Guest at the valedictory session could not attend it in view of the accident and due to his visit to the accident site. However in a message the Governor conveyed his good wishes for success of the programme.     


At the valedictory session, different speakers spoke about the importance and necessity of celebrating Birth Anniversary of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in present day world faced with the challenge of terrorism and violence. Shri Shyamal Kumar Sen, Former Governor, West Bengal, Swami Dibyananda of Saradapith, Ramakrishna Math & Mission, Belur and Shri Tamal Kanti Ghosh, Editor, Northern India Patrika were among the speakers. Sripada B.S.Sanyasi Maharaj, Secretary, Gaudiya Mission was also present.


At the concluding function, prizes were given away to the successful contestants of various competitions organized as part of the celebrations. Earlier on the day, a Dharma Mahasammelan on ‘Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhur Drishtite Samaj Sanskara’ was organized. Sadhus, scholars and eminent persons from various fields addressed the gathering.   


It may be mentioned that Sri Chaitanya Mela organized by Sri Gaudiya Mission in collaboration with other Vaishnava organizations including Mahanam Sevak Sangha and People’s Forum for Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu began on 27th of this month (last Sunday). Shri Tathagata Roy, Hon’ble Governor of Tripura formally inaugurated Sri Chaitanya Janmotsava.


As part of the celebration a Nagar Sankirtan procession was organized and it started from Dharmatala and concluded at Bhagini Nivedita Udyan. Thereafter, a Dharmasabha was held.


A Vaishnava Sammelan and seminars were also organized. On the first day, Dharma Mahasabha on ‘Chatanyer Premadharma O Bartaman Samaj’ was held. It was followed by Gaudiya Vaishnava Sammelan on ‘Sri Chaitannnyadever Nam-Prem Prachare Gaudiya Sampraday’ (2nd day), Saraswata Alochana Sabha (Conference) on ‘Sriman Mahaprabhur Shikshay Sahishnuta’ (3rd day), and Sri Chaitanya-darshane Paropakara O Manavatavad (4th day). Sadhus, scholars and eminent persons from various fields took part in the deliberation.


As part of the celebration, an exhibition was put up and cultural programmes were held. On all the days Jay Vandana & Kirtana were performed. Artistes also presented Baul Geet, Dandiya Dance, Mayur Dance,Kathak Dance, Jhumar Dance.
